When you see these Putiputi Pounamu Toki necklaces offered, it is best to grab them while you can, due to their rarity.
Putiputi Pounamu is also called Marsden Jade, due to it coming from one New Zealand valley, Marsden Valley, near Greymouth, on the South Island of Aotearoa. Hence the rarity. It is also known as Flower Jade (putiputi is the Māori word for Flower).
Putiputi Pounamu is greenstone rock that has cream, yellow, orange or brown inclusions. The inclusions occur on the surface of the rock, the rind. Over time, and with the action of weathering by water, minerals, mostly iron, get into the greenstone through tiny cracks. The patterns caused by the minerals are referred to as the "flowers".
And in Toki # 4, look closely, you can see a shape that looks like a tiny flower.
The greenstone toki pictured are all measuring approximately 75mm long, and approximately 35mm wide at the bottom. Each toki is sold separately, and you receive the one pictured. It will be unique to you.
Each toki is beautifully bound at the top, and had a stong plaited adjustable cord. Each one is beautiful in its own right.
The toki design represents the Māori adze, an important implement for carving. In a hei toki (toki necklace), it carries a spiritual meaning, one of wisdom, authority and power. So it is the perfect gift for someone you look up to, or who has achieved an important milestone in life.
