The Story

This New Zealand Long-Tailed Bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus) is one of a fabulous range of soft toys for children to play with and learn about New Zealand's endangered species.  What better way?

The Long-Tailed Bat is found throughout New Zealand.  They are small, about the size of a mouse.  A lot smaller than the toy!  The bat can fly at up to 60km/hr, and eats small moths, flies and beetles on the wing.

Like other bats, they navigate using echo-location, which sometimes is discernible to the human ear.

They are active at night, and can be seen flying at dawn and dusk.  I have never seen them but now would love to!  They roost during the day in mature native trees, in hollows or in epiphyte plants, or under bark.

The long-tailed bat is classified as nationally critical due to predation by cats and stoats.  So it doesn't hurt to have a conversation with kids, as they play with the toy, about keeping the cat inside at night, or about trapping stoats.  Anything to keep these marvellous creatures alive.

The Long-Tailed Bat Toy measures approximately 38cm (15") across his wing span.  Kids can play with him, moving his wings.  He also has a loop to hang from.  Lovely soft plush toy with a great back story.

Shipped worldwide from New Zealand.
